Delivering approximately 100 horse power combined with a "world-Leading" efficiency Toyota declares it is due to the 1.5-liter Toyota Hybrid System II (THS II) with reduction gear powertrain.
On the extremely optimistic Japanese JC08 test cycle, the Aqua gave 35.4 km/L (83.3 mpg U.S., 2.8 l/100km) and 40.0 km/l (94 mpg U.S., 2.5 l/100km) under the MLIT 10-15 test cycle.
The Atkinson-cycle engine uses a cooled Exhaust-Gas Recirculation (EGR) as well as an efficient battery-powered water pump, a friction-reducing beltless design and precise coolant-water-flow volume control.
The production version of the Aqua was unveiled in the 2011 Tokyo Motor Show. The production Prius C was introduced in US at the January 2012 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The Aqua was launched in Japan during December 2011 at a price of ¥1.69 million (US$21,700) The Prius c is scheduled to be released in the U.S. in March 2012, at a price starting at US$18,950 and in Australia and Canada during the first quarter of 2012.

The Prius c features Toyota's Hybrid Synergy Drive with a 1.5-liter DOHC four-cylinder, 16–valve with VVT-i gasoline engine with a high-output motor. The hybrid system includes a new inverter, motor and battery. The hybrid power train weighs around 88 lb (40 kg) less than that the standard Prius Liftback. The 1NZ-FXE engine produces 54 kW (73 hp) and the HSD motor is rated at 45 kW (60 hp). Total output is rated at 74 kW (99 hp).

Under the United States Environmental Protection Agency test cycles, the Prius c is rated at 53 mpg-US (4.4 L/100 km; 64 mpg-imp) city and 46 mpg-US (5.1 L/100 km; 55 mpg-imp) highway, for a combined fuel economy of 50 mpg-US (4.7 L/100 km; 60 mpg-imp), the same as the conventional Prius but higher in city driving. The Prius c emission certification is SULEV.
Socially flexibleThe Aqua includes a Rotating Passenger Seat to facilitate smooth way in and way out for people who are differently-abled, as well as an electric loading/unloading mechanism for manual wheelchairs and designed-in wheelchair stowage capability.
